In this class the participant will gain much insight to how the percussion instruments are played in such styles as Salsa, Merengue and Cumbia. We will be covering historical background information, proper technique and standard patterns for the following instruments: Conga, bongo, campana (bell), timbales, guacharacha (guiro) & maracas. CHRISTOPH QUAST Music Director of "Son Merekumbe" & Owner: Folklorico Percussion Christoph teaches traditional drum, dance and song presenting interpretations from the African cultures in the Americas. Countries included are Colombia, Peru, Belize, Cuba, Dominican Rep., Venezuela, and several rhythms from West Africa. Playing instruments (most made by Christoph) and wearing costumes traditional to the culture it was born in. |

Students will have the opportunity to learn traditional/authentic patterns from the cultures that spawned/pioneered the cajon drum with Christoph D. Quast (musical director of the performing group "Son Merekumbe"). In this one hour class Christoph will take you through a brief history of the cajon, solid technique lessons and several rhythms from Spain, Afro-Peru and Afro-Cuba that any cajon enthusiast can dip their hands into. Any type cajon drum can be utilized in this class being the focus is on the "FEEL" of what can be very interpretive patterns. |

| BUDHI HARLOW Budhi Harlow is musician, composer, drum teacher, and dynamic performer. He has produced 6 albums all based on or inspired by West African Rhythms. He has been sharing his passion for music and dance to children and adults for over 14 years. Budhi has studied drum and dance all over the world; primarily in Senegal, Creator of the Rhythm, Song and Dance Program, Budhi has designed cutting edge creative arts education. His program is seen all over the south coast in preschools, elementary and high schools, universities, special needs, brain injured, retirement and hospice facilities. |
