Trey O'Toole:
Pulse Drumming Co-Owner & Lead Instructor
Combining over 20 years of experience, influence,
education and instruction, Trey has become a unique and
highly sought after musical talent who has made a name for
himself as a versatile performer as well as a competent
educator. Trey has performed with numerous Symphonies
& Orchestra's throughout the west coast, many well known
members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, studio
recordings for Major League Baseball, motion picture
scores, commercials, jingles and more! He has taught for
Oxnard Unified School Dist., Yamaha School of Music,
American Music Academy & Ventura County School of Music. He has studied (2) years at Blue Lake
Music Academy (2) years at ISOMATA.[ Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts.] then U.C.S.B. as a
percussionist in the Bachelor of Music program. Trey currently performs with Monkey C, a unique
gamelan group which incorporates rock, jazz, African percussion and electric guitar with Indonesian

Roland Martinez
Bringing almost 30 years of talent to the Pulse Drumming
roster is Roland Martinez. A native of California, Roland is
originally a keyboardist. During his early schooling, he
studied rudimental drumming exclusively with Thomas
McMahon, a college music director and rudimental
instructor from Long Beach State University which landed
Roland many rolls as percussion advisor with local high
schools. He also studied under the late director Frank
Salazar, Ventura College music director, where he was
involved in the County Symphony, Jazz band and
ensembles as well as singing with the Ventura County
Master Chorale and Gold Coast Concert Choirs. He also

Jim Christie
Jim Christie, a well known recording artist, teacher and touring
band member with Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams and more.
He has recorded with Sara Evans, Norah Jones, Flaco Jimenez
and has played drums/percussion on soundtracks such as
Crossing Jordan and the Horse Whisperer to name a few.
Recently taking a break from the long road of touring, Jim is
home and sharing his experiences through teaching multiple
drum styles at Pulse Drumming.

Frank Briggs
Frank grew up in Central New York and started playing drums at
age 10 Briggs recorded his first single on B and W Records
before he was a teenager and by age 17, was opening for Alice
Cooper and Sly and The Family Stone. By then, he was listening to
John Coltrane and Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Tony
Williams, Jack DeJohnette and Elvin Jones. But early on, he joined
805, a popular Syracuse, NY local rock band, and soon signed to
RCA Records. TV appearances included Arsenio Hall, Pat Sajak,
Soul Train, and the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Frank has recorded
jingles, film trailers and has appeared with artists on such
labels as Universal, Higher Octave, MTM, Immune, EMI / Sony
and Warner Bros. plus many independent releases. With his first
instructional book/DVD, The Complete Modern Drum Set, he
consistently heads Mel Bay’s Top 10 percussion methods. A
dozen books and DVD / CD’s later, his instructional material is
used in colleges(recommended by professors at Berklee School
of Music) by teachers and students worldwide.

Austin Wrinkle is a versatile drummer and percussionist
who has studied rhythm and drumming from near and far. By
combining techniques and concepts from many cultures, he
has forged a universal approach to playing an array of
percussion instruments. A founding member of the
internationally acclaimed percussion group Hands On’Semble,
a percussion group devoted to the art of hand drumming.
Winner of Drum! Magazine reader’s poll award for best
percussion ensemble in 2003, 2002, and first runner up award
in 2001. In addition to Hands On'Semble, Austin is also a
founding member of the gypsy/jazz/rock band PLOTZ! Their CD
Extraordinary Renditions was the winner of "Best Instrumental
CD" and "Best Instrumental Song" (Splash, by Daniel
Rosenboom) from the MAVRIC Awards in Ventura County and
"Best International Instrumental CD" from Toronto Exclusive
Magazine's Music Awards.

Mark Tusler has an eclectic background in set drumming
and percussion ranging from rock, bebop jazz, and fusion to
Japanese taiko and Indonesian gamelan. He has performed
with many rock and jazz groups. At CSU, Northridge he studied
Western orchestral keyboard percussion and timpani ,
Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian rhythms while furthering his
passion for the drum set. Continuing his education, he earned a
PhD in ethnomusicology at UC, Santa Barbara. During this time
he studied and performed extensively with the Los Angeles
Matsuri Taiko under the direction of sensei Etsuo Hongo and
also joined the UCSB gamelan, at the time instructed by Ed
Dorsey. Mark currently performs with Monkey C, a unique
gamelan group which incorporates rock, jazz, African percussion
and electric guitar with Indonesian instruments and musical
principles. He enjoys teaching and creating new ways in which
to develop rhythmic concepts and drum set independence.

Rick Latham
Rick is known as one of the music industry’s most in demand
studio and touring drummers today, an exciting solo artist,
acclaimed composer, globally renowned author and drumming
guru. At just 25 years of age, it was the success of his ground
breaking drum text, ADVANCED FUNK STUDIES, that launched
him into the international percussion spotlight, but is has been
his expertise as a versatile performer that has made him one of
contemporary drummings' most respected players. Originally
from Columbia, South Carolina and now living in Los Angeles,
Rick is currently the drummer with Grammy Award winning artist
JUICE NEWTON as well as the founder and driving force of his
own L.A. All-Star jazz “super-group” RICK LATHAM AND THE
GROOVE DOCTORS. In a recent feature interview, MODERN
DRUMMER Magazine refers to Latham as “a man who many
consider to be one of the best clinicians on the planet”. The
magazine also names his ADVANCED FUNK STUDIES among
“The 25 Greatest Drum Books Ever Published.".


Chris Lacinak
In his book A Modern Approach to New Orleans "Second Line"
Drumming, Chris, a respected New Orleans drummer shares
his experience and perceptions of how to play New Orleans
style. He gives insight into New Orleans style "second line"
drumming using a systematic approach. Numerous examples
and exercises based on traditional parade, Mambo, Rhythm
and Blues, and Mardi Gras Indian beats as well as
transcriptions of performances by other New Orleans
drummers. Chris has most recently worked with Henry Butler,
Voice of the wetlands (featuring Dr. John, Cyril Neville, Anders
Osbourn, Tab Benoit) Papa Mali , Earl King, Maria Mauldar
and has taught New Orleans style drumming at The
Drummers Collective for the past ten years.
