Judy Piazza

Judy Piazza has been exploring sound since a young age. A percussionist, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, music therapist, and educator, Judy performs, facilitates workshops, and teaches nationally/internationally. Judy is founder of Resonance & Rhythms, member of the Michigan-based percussion ensemble Repercussions, artistic director and founder of the past frame drum ensemble Bendira, and artist with VSA Arts..

Judy has been deeply inspired and influenced by Glen Velez, Russill Paul, and Ubaka Hill, with whom she has performed. She has also shared the stage with Allessandra Belloni, Paul Winter, Arthur Hull, Edwina Lee Tyler, Michael Markus, and Gordy Ryan.

She continues to delve deeply into the nature and use of rhythm and sound among first peoples, as well as the sonic possibilities and healing aspects of rhythm, voice, didgeridoo, and tone. She has travelled to Peru, Brazil, Central America, India, and Japan to study and experience the rhythmic and vocal traditions of indigenous peoples there, or to teach/perform, and has lived in Europe for seven months. She has studied with distinguished indigenous teachers in the States from Tuva (throat singing), Chile (Mapuche people with kultrun drums), India (devotional singing as well as principles and performance of tala), West & North Africa, Italy, Native America, and more. She facilitates frame drum workshops, rhythm and song circles, Sound Energetics workshops, Tuning the Human Instrument classes, Earth Rhythm & Songs school assemblies, and interactive performances for all ages to nurture community as well as to communicate gentle yet powerful messages regarding relationships to our self, each other, and to our Earth. Past affiliations include Upland Hills School & Ecological Awareness Center, Young Audiences of Michigan, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and Bloomfield Hills Model High School.

Presently, Judy coordinates multicultural public programming for the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, MI. This includes a weekly performance series as well as the Concert of Colors, Detroit’s Diversity Festival.
